TENS Rental
Have you seen me talk about TENS machines but have no idea what it is?
The TENS machines that I have are specifically made for birth. I have both the ELLE TENS and the Obi TENS.
TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation.
It is a small, handheld machine that attaches to 4 small pads that stick to your lower back. The small pads then transmit small and safe electrical currents through your skin. It feels like a tingle or buzz while it’s happening but some people do describe it as a bit of a pinch.
How does that help with labour? Well we don’t know exactly. They believe it’s a combination of factors including:
* the electrical pulses stop the signals from reaching your brain.
* the pulses help encourage your body to release endorphins, a feel-good hormone.
* it helps you feel more in control of your labour, which lowers anxiety.
* it becomes part of your routine during contractions, which helps to distract you from the pain and helps you focus.
One of the best parts of the TENS machine is that you can start it in early labour and use it throughout and if at any point you don’t like the feeling anymore and need a break, you just turn it off and it’s done!
